String Beach House

  • COMMERCIAL

2007.06

Kamakura-shi, Kanagawa

A temporary beach house for the summer along the shore. Contrary to traditional beach house which are mainly large mat spaces without privacy from the exterior and between the customers themselves during the resting time, proposal was to ensure privacy and also direct sea view for each client. In this 18mx15m steel structure building, numerous strings are connected floor and ceiling in a random layout. Strings are filling the space like a spider web, while leaving the sea view as well as allowing partition to bamboo blinds. The variations of density of those strings define open spaces and directly influence the way people can gather. Chairs, benches, hammocks, bar counter are hanged to those strings; the density of hanging points, spread over the plan, becomes a way to awake people’s activities.
